Our adventure really started when we started up the Flathead valley river "road", over the Flathead pass, 5895 ft. We had heard tales of wash-outs, and rocky trails, but we're pleasantly surprised by the gentle climb over the pass. We actually biked over the pass and started heading down before we realized we had passed the pass. The decent was as advertised... at the end of the day Laura was referring to the "road" as a dried river bed.
The forest was beautiful, with mixed species of trees, open meadows and marshlands. The valley wasn't as "pristine" as I had imagined, shared between several stakeholders, but beautiful and peaceful just the same.
We camped along the shores of the Flathead River, and enjoyed several hours of sunshine to set up camp, bathe in the river, snack and drink a beer before a huge thunderstorm rolled through. We took shelter in our tents and sleeping bags for a pre-dinner nap.
