Aug 8 Sparwood to Pollock Creek CS part 1

After debating the two options, we all agreed we would try the "main" route through the Flathead Valley, instead of the easier and shorter route through Fernie. There was a lot more uncertainty (bears, weather, quality of trail) with the route we had chosen ‎but it was the route we had been drawn to riding since the beginning, so we all agreed we were going to try. Mildred's recon found good enough roads for Mildred and Linda to meet us at the designated BC rec primitive cg's so we could reduce the amount of equipment we needed to carry with us (no tents), and if anyone needed a way out they could join Linda and Mildred.

Our day started early (left at 9am) and auspiciously (we found our lost key fob in the bike lane as we started to bike away!).

The first 20 miles were on roads, with a slight uphill to the coal mine site, Corbin. Sunday morning traffic was sparse, so we had a nice easy ride to start the day. At Corbin the pavement ends and the Flathead "road" begins. For the next 20 miles we needed to bike over the Flathead Pass and then down to our first CG along the flathead river.
